Effect of Cost–Volume–Profit Analysis on Profitability of Manufacturing Companies in Nigeria

Abstract

Cost–Volume–Profit (CVP) analysis has become an indispensable management accounting tool for planning, decision-making, cost control, and profit optimization in modern business organizations. Cost–Volume–Profit analysis examines the relationship among costs, sales volume, selling price, and profit, thereby enabling managers to evaluate the financial implications of operational decisions under different business conditions. Through break-even analysis, contribution margin analysis, margin of safety, and profit planning, CVP analysis assists organizations in determining optimal production levels, pricing strategies, product mix decisions, and cost structures necessary to achieve desired profitability. In Nigeria, manufacturing companies play a significant role in industrialization, employment generation, export promotion, and economic growth. However, the sector continues to face numerous challenges, including rising production costs, inflation, exchange rate volatility, unstable energy supply, high borrowing costs, supply chain disruptions, and intense market competition, all of which exert considerable pressure on profitability. Effective application of Cost–Volume–Profit analysis is expected to improve managerial decision-making, optimize resource utilization, strengthen cost management, and enhance profitability despite these operational challenges. Although previous studies have examined management accounting practices and organizational performance, empirical evidence regarding the effect of Cost–Volume–Profit analysis on the profitability of manufacturing companies in Nigeria remains limited and inconclusive. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Cost–Volume–Profit analysis on the profitability of manufacturing companies in Nigeria. The study is anchored on Decision Theory, Contingency Theory, and the Resource-Based View (RBV). Decision Theory posits that managers rely on relevant accounting information, including Cost–Volume–Profit analysis, to make rational decisions that maximize organizational profitability. Contingency Theory argues that the effectiveness of management accounting techniques depends on organizational and environmental conditions, requiring firms to adapt their decision-making tools to changing business environments. The Resource-Based View explains that effective utilization of management accounting techniques constitutes a valuable organizational capability capable of improving operational efficiency, competitive advantage, and financial performance. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a comprehensive framework for explaining the relationship between Cost–Volume–Profit analysis and the profitability of manufacturing companies in Nigeria. The study adopts a quantitative research design using a structured questionnaire administered to management accountants, cost accountants, finance managers, financial controllers, production managers, internal auditors, chief financial officers, and other personnel responsible for financial planning and managerial decision-making within selected manufacturing companies in Nigeria. A stratified random sampling technique will be employed to ensure adequate representation of manufacturing firms operating in food and beverages, consumer goods, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, cement, textiles, industrial goods, and other manufacturing subsectors. Cost–Volume–Profit analysis will be measured using break-even analysis, contribution margin analysis, margin of safety analysis, profit planning, cost behaviour analysis, pricing decisions, and budgeting practices, while profitability will be measured using net profit margin, gross profit margin, Return on Assets (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE), operating profit, sales growth, and return on investment. Primary data collected from respondents will be analyzed using descriptive statistics to summarize respondents' demographic characteristics and perceptions regarding Cost–Volume–Profit analysis and profitability. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) will be employed to examine the effect of Cost–Volume–Profit analysis on profitability. The measurement model will be evaluated using Cronbach's Alpha, Composite Reliability (CR), Average Variance Extracted (AVE), and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to establish the reliability and validity of the research instrument. Additional diagnostic tests, including multicollinearity assessment, common method bias analysis, and model fit indices such as the Comparative Fit Index (CFI), Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI), Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA), and Standardized Root Mean Square Residual (SRMR), will be conducted to ensure the adequacy, consistency, reliability, and robustness of the structural model. The study anticipates that Cost–Volume–Profit analysis will have a significant positive effect on the profitability of manufacturing companies in Nigeria. Effective application of CVP analysis is expected to improve pricing decisions, optimize production levels, enhance cost control, strengthen budgeting accuracy, and facilitate efficient allocation of organizational resources. Manufacturing companies that effectively utilize Cost–Volume–Profit analysis are also anticipated to improve operational efficiency, minimize unnecessary production costs, increase contribution margins, strengthen profit planning, and respond more effectively to changes in market demand and cost conditions. Furthermore, effective CVP analysis is expected to support strategic decision-making, improve competitive advantage, enhance financial sustainability, and strengthen long-term organizational performance. Conversely, inadequate application of Cost–Volume–Profit analysis, poor cost classification, inaccurate cost information, and ineffective managerial decision-making may reduce operational efficiency, increase production costs, weaken profitability, and limit organizational growth. Consequently, effective utilization of Cost–Volume–Profit analysis is expected to contribute significantly to improving profitability, operational efficiency, and long-term sustainability among manufacturing companies in Nigeria. This study is expected to make significant theoretical and empirical contributions to the literature on management accounting, cost accounting, financial management, and manufacturing performance by providing comprehensive evidence on the relationship between Cost–Volume–Profit analysis and the profitability of manufacturing companies in Nigeria. Unlike previous studies that broadly examined management accounting practices or cost management techniques, this research specifically evaluates Cost–Volume–Profit analysis as a strategic determinant of profitability using primary data and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The findings will provide valuable insights for manufacturing companies, professional accounting bodies, policymakers, financial managers, management accountants, investors, business consultants, and academic researchers regarding the strategic importance of Cost–Volume–Profit analysis in enhancing organizational profitability and competitiveness. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening management accounting practices, improving cost management systems, enhancing managerial decision-making, expanding employee training in Cost–Volume–Profit analysis, promoting efficient resource utilization, and fostering sustainable industrial growth in Nigeria.
