Impact of Classroom Accounting Exercises on Students’ Ability to Handle Complex Accounting Questions

Abstract

Classroom accounting exercises are important instructional activities that provide students with opportunities to practise accounting procedures and apply theoretical knowledge to challenging problems. Complex accounting questions often require students to interpret information, identify relevant accounting principles, perform several calculations, make appropriate adjustments, and arrive at accurate solutions. However, some accounting students may experience difficulties handling such questions because of inadequate practice and limited exposure to progressively challenging accounting problems. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of classroom accounting exercises on students’ ability to handle complex accounting questions. Classroom accounting exercises involve structured problems provided during lessons to help students develop practical competence in accounting. These exercises may cover multiple accounting procedures and require students to analyse transactions, calculate relevant amounts, prepare accounting records, make adjustments, and present appropriate solutions. When exercises are introduced progressively from simple to more demanding problems, students can become familiar with the steps involved in solving complex accounting questions and develop greater confidence in applying accounting knowledge. Students’ ability to handle complex accounting questions refers to their capacity to understand complicated accounting problems, identify the requirements of a question, select appropriate procedures, perform necessary calculations, and produce accurate and logically organized solutions. Classroom accounting exercises can strengthen this ability by providing repeated opportunities for students to practise problem-solving and receive feedback on their performance. Regular exposure to challenging exercises may also help students improve their accuracy, analytical ability, time management, and confidence when dealing with unfamiliar accounting questions. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students in selected tertiary institutions, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and a practical assessment containing complex accounting questions designed to measure students’ ability to solve and handle challenging accounting problems. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and relevant inferential statistical techniques at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that classroom accounting exercises have a significant positive impact on students’ ability to handle complex accounting questions. Students who receive regular exposure to progressively challenging exercises are expected to demonstrate stronger ability to interpret accounting problems, select appropriate procedures, perform required calculations, and produce accurate solutions. The study may also reveal that insufficient classroom practice contributes to difficulties in managing questions involving multiple accounting concepts, adjustments, calculations, and stages of analysis. The findings are expected to have important implications for accounting teaching and learning. Accounting lecturers may need to provide students with a structured range of exercises that gradually increase in complexity rather than concentrating mainly on simple questions. Classroom activities should provide opportunities for students to analyse difficult problems, explain their procedures, compare solutions, identify errors, and receive corrective feedback. This approach may improve students’ ability to transfer accounting knowledge to complex examination and practical accounting situations. The study will be beneficial to Accounting Education students, lecturers, tertiary institutions, curriculum developers, and employers. Students may develop stronger problem-solving and practical accounting skills, while lecturers may gain useful information for improving the design and delivery of accounting exercises. Tertiary institutions and curriculum developers may use the findings to strengthen practical accounting instruction and assessment practices. Employers may also benefit from graduates who are better prepared to analyse and resolve complicated accounting problems in professional settings. The study recommends that accounting lecturers should incorporate regular classroom exercises that progress from basic to complex accounting problems. Students should be encouraged to practise questions involving multiple procedures, calculations, adjustments, and accounting concepts while receiving timely feedback on their solutions. Institutions should also provide adequate instructional resources to support practical accounting activities. It is concluded that consistent and appropriately structured classroom accounting exercises can improve students’ ability to handle complex accounting questions and strengthen their overall practical accounting competence.
