Impact of Accounting Students’ Participation in Business Advisory Exercises on Their Professional Judgment Skills in Nigeria

Abstract

Business advisory exercises are practical learning activities that expose accounting students to situations requiring them to analyze business information, evaluate alternatives, identify possible risks, and provide appropriate recommendations. Professional judgment skills refer to the ability to apply accounting knowledge, professional reasoning, critical thinking, and ethical considerations when making informed decisions in accounting practice. However, accounting students may possess theoretical knowledge without having sufficient opportunities to apply that knowledge to realistic business situations. This study therefore examines the impact of accounting students’ participation in business advisory exercises on their professional judgment skills in Nigeria. Business advisory exercises provide students with opportunities to examine practical business problems and develop recommendations based on available financial and non-financial information. These exercises may involve analyzing business performance, evaluating investment alternatives, assessing costs, interpreting financial information, identifying risks, and recommending appropriate courses of action. Through repeated engagement with such activities, students can develop the ability to consider relevant information, compare alternatives, justify conclusions, and recognize the implications of different business decisions. Participation in these exercises can therefore provide a practical connection between classroom accounting knowledge and professional accounting responsibilities. Professional judgment skills involve the ability of accounting students to make reasonable and well-supported decisions when faced with accounting and business situations that require interpretation and evaluation. These skills include analytical thinking, evaluation of evidence, problem-solving, decision-making, professional reasoning, and the ability to consider ethical and financial implications. Students with strong professional judgment skills are better positioned to evaluate complex business information and provide appropriate recommendations. Regular participation in business advisory exercises may strengthen these skills by exposing students to practical situations that require them to apply accounting knowledge rather than merely recall concepts. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise accounting students in selected universities in Nigeria, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure students’ participation in business advisory exercises and their professional judgment skills. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of participation in business advisory exercises on students’ professional judgment skills. The study is expected to establish that accounting students’ participation in business advisory exercises has a positive impact on their professional judgment skills. Students who participate regularly in practical advisory activities are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to analyze business information, evaluate alternatives, identify relevant considerations, and justify professional decisions. The study may further indicate that repeated exposure to realistic business problems enables students to develop greater confidence and competence in applying accounting knowledge to situations requiring professional judgment. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in accounting education. Accounting educators may need to provide students with more opportunities to engage in practical business advisory exercises as part of classroom instruction and assessment. Case-based learning, business problem-solving activities, financial analysis tasks, advisory simulations, and group-based decision-making exercises can help students develop practical judgment while strengthening their understanding of accounting concepts. Integrating such activities into accounting education can make learning more application-oriented and professionally relevant. The study will be significant to accounting students, accounting educators, university administrators, curriculum planners, professional accounting bodies, and employers of accounting graduates. Accounting students may benefit from improved preparation for professional responsibilities that require sound judgment and decision-making. Educators and curriculum planners may use the findings to strengthen practical components of accounting programmes, while professional bodies and employers may gain useful insight into approaches for developing graduates who can apply accounting knowledge effectively when evaluating business situations. The study recommends that universities and accounting educators increase students’ participation in structured business advisory exercises and integrate realistic business cases into accounting courses. Students should be encouraged to analyze financial information, evaluate alternative solutions, consider risks, and provide reasoned recommendations during practical learning activities. Regular feedback should also be provided to help students improve their analytical and professional reasoning abilities. The study concludes that meaningful participation in business advisory exercises can contribute to the development of stronger professional judgment skills among accounting students and better prepare them for practical accounting responsibilities.
