Impact of Accounting Students’ Exposure to Entrepreneurial Failure Cases on Their Understanding of Business Risk
Abstract
Entrepreneurial failure cases refer to documented examples of businesses or entrepreneurial ventures that experienced unsuccessful outcomes due to factors such as poor financial management, inadequate planning, weak market decisions, operational challenges, or other business-related problems, while understanding of business risk refers to students’ ability to identify, explain, assess, and interpret uncertainties that may affect business operations and financial outcomes. Exposure to entrepreneurial failure cases can provide Accounting Education students with practical examples of how business decisions and weaknesses can contribute to unfavorable outcomes. This may help students develop a clearer understanding of the nature and consequences of business risk. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of Accounting students’ exposure to entrepreneurial failure cases on their understanding of business risk. Exposure to entrepreneurial failure cases may involve the use of documented business failures, case studies, classroom discussions, financial information, business reports, and practical examples of unsuccessful entrepreneurial ventures. Students may examine the causes of business failure, financial difficulties, management weaknesses, operational problems, and decision-making errors associated with different cases. Such activities can help students examine business situations from a practical perspective and recognize the relationship between business decisions and potential risks. Understanding of business risk involves students’ ability to identify different types of business risks, explain factors that may create uncertainty in business operations, assess possible consequences of business risks, and distinguish between different risk situations. Students exposed to entrepreneurial failure cases may have opportunities to observe how risks can emerge and affect business performance. Examining real or realistic cases of business failure can therefore help students connect accounting knowledge with broader business risk situations and improve their ability to interpret risk-related information. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students in selected tertiary institutions. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a case-based assessment designed to measure students’ exposure to entrepreneurial failure cases and their understanding of business risk. The assessment will present realistic entrepreneurial situations requiring students to identify, explain, and assess relevant business risks. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that exposure to entrepreneurial failure cases has a significant positive impact on students’ understanding of business risk. Students with greater exposure to entrepreneurial failure cases are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to identify business risks, explain their possible causes, assess their consequences, and interpret risk-related business situations. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in Accounting Education. Entrepreneurial failure cases can provide students with practical learning experiences that encourage them to examine the consequences of business decisions and recognize potential risks. Lecturers may therefore incorporate carefully selected business failure cases into accounting and entrepreneurship-related learning activities to complement theoretical explanations of business risk. The study will be beneficial to Accounting Education students, lecturers, tertiary institutions, curriculum developers, entrepreneurship educators, and business-related programme coordinators. Students may develop a stronger understanding of business risks and become better equipped to analyze business situations. Lecturers may gain useful information for incorporating case-based learning into accounting instruction, while institutions and curriculum developers may use the findings to strengthen practical business education. The study recommends that tertiary institutions should encourage the use of documented entrepreneurial failure cases in Accounting Education and related business courses. Lecturers should provide students with opportunities to analyze the financial, operational, managerial, and strategic issues associated with failed business ventures. Students should also be encouraged to identify lessons from these cases and apply them when analyzing potential business risks. The study concludes that exposure to entrepreneurial failure cases can strengthen students’ understanding of business risk by providing practical examples of how risks can affect entrepreneurial ventures.
