Impact of Accounting Departmental Resources on Students’ Engagement with Accounting Courses
Abstract
Accounting departmental resources refer to the academic, instructional, technological, and learning materials available within an Accounting department to support students’ learning experiences, while engagement with accounting courses refers to students’ level of interest, participation, attention, involvement, and active commitment to learning activities in accounting courses. Adequate departmental resources can create a supportive learning environment and provide students with opportunities to interact more actively with accounting concepts and course activities. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of Accounting departmental resources on students’ engagement with accounting courses. Accounting departmental resources may include relevant textbooks, accounting journals, professional publications, computer facilities, accounting software, internet access, financial databases, instructional materials, departmental libraries, and other facilities that support the teaching and learning of accounting. The availability and accessibility of these resources can influence the extent to which students are able to study independently, participate in practical activities, explore accounting information, and develop a deeper interest in their courses. Engagement with accounting courses involves students’ active participation in classroom activities, willingness to study accounting materials, interest in accounting topics, contribution to discussions, completion of learning tasks, and sustained attention to course activities. Students who have access to adequate academic and instructional resources may find it easier to participate actively in their learning. Departmental resources can therefore contribute to a more supportive learning environment that encourages students to interact with accounting course content both within and outside the classroom. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students in selected tertiary institutions. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure the availability and accessibility of Accounting departmental resources and students’ engagement with accounting courses. The instrument will cover resources such as learning materials, technological facilities, library resources, accounting software, and other instructional support, as well as students’ participation, interest, attention, and involvement in accounting course activities. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that Accounting departmental resources have a significant positive impact on students’ engagement with accounting courses. Students who have greater access to relevant academic, instructional, and technological resources are expected to demonstrate higher levels of participation, interest, involvement, and commitment to accounting learning activities. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in Accounting Education. Adequate departmental resources may support more active and meaningful student engagement by providing opportunities for independent study, practical learning, and exploration of accounting concepts. Accounting departments and tertiary institutions may therefore need to pay greater attention to the availability, quality, and accessibility of resources that support effective learning. The study will be beneficial to Accounting Education students, lecturers, heads of departments, tertiary institutions, curriculum developers, and education administrators. Students may benefit from an improved learning environment that encourages greater participation and involvement in accounting courses, while lecturers and departmental administrators may obtain useful information for improving the resources available for accounting instruction. The findings may also assist institutions in making informed decisions regarding the provision and management of learning resources. The study recommends that tertiary institutions should improve the availability and accessibility of relevant Accounting departmental resources, including current learning materials, technological facilities, accounting software, professional publications, and library resources. Accounting departments should also ensure that available resources are effectively maintained and integrated into teaching and learning activities. The study concludes that adequate and accessible departmental resources can promote stronger student engagement and support more active participation in accounting courses.
