Effect of Participation in Accounting Outreach Activities on the Teaching Readiness of Accounting Education Students
Abstract
Accounting outreach activities refer to organized educational activities through which Accounting Education students share accounting and financial knowledge with individuals, groups, schools, businesses, or communities outside their regular classroom environment, while teaching readiness refers to the extent to which students possess the knowledge, skills, confidence, and preparedness required to undertake teaching responsibilities effectively. Participation in accounting outreach activities can provide students with opportunities to communicate accounting concepts, interact with different learners, and apply their knowledge in practical educational situations. These experiences may strengthen students’ preparedness for future teaching responsibilities. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of participation in accounting outreach activities on the teaching readiness of Accounting Education students. Participation in accounting outreach activities may involve financial literacy education, basic bookkeeping demonstrations, accounting awareness programmes, business record-keeping guidance, presentations, community education, and other activities through which students communicate accounting knowledge to non-specialist audiences. Such activities require students to prepare instructional materials, explain accounting concepts in simple terms, respond to questions, and adapt their communication to different learners. Regular involvement can provide students with practical exposure to teaching-related activities outside conventional classroom settings. Teaching readiness refers to students’ preparedness to plan and deliver lessons, communicate accounting concepts clearly, select suitable teaching approaches, respond to learners’ questions, manage instructional activities, and apply accounting knowledge in educational settings. Students who participate in accounting outreach activities may have greater opportunities to practice these skills before entering formal teaching environments. Outreach experiences can therefore help students develop practical abilities that support their readiness to undertake accounting teaching responsibilities. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students in selected tertiary institutions. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a teaching-readiness assessment designed to measure students’ participation in accounting outreach activities and their readiness for teaching responsibilities. The instruments will cover areas such as participation in accounting presentations, learner interaction, preparation of educational materials, communication of accounting concepts, lesson delivery, instructional planning, and response to learners’ questions. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that participation in accounting outreach activities has a significant positive effect on the teaching readiness of Accounting Education students. Students who participate more actively in accounting outreach activities are expected to demonstrate stronger preparedness to communicate accounting concepts, plan instructional activities, interact with learners, and perform other responsibilities associated with accounting teaching. The findings are expected to have implications for the preparation of Accounting Education students. Accounting outreach activities can provide practical experiences that complement theoretical coursework and formal teaching practice. Incorporating structured outreach activities into Accounting Education programmes may therefore give students additional opportunities to develop instructional, communication, and learner-interaction skills before entering formal teaching environments. The study will be beneficial to Accounting Education students, lecturers, tertiary institutions, schools, community organizations, and accounting education programme coordinators. Students may gain practical teaching experience and become better prepared for future instructional responsibilities. Lecturers and institutions may obtain useful information for strengthening teacher preparation, while schools and communities may benefit from accounting knowledge provided through organized outreach activities. The study recommends that tertiary institutions should provide Accounting Education students with structured opportunities to participate in accounting outreach activities. Lecturers should guide students in preparing presentations, educational materials, and practical accounting activities for different audiences. Institutions should also establish partnerships with schools, businesses, and community organizations to create meaningful outreach opportunities. The study concludes that participation in accounting outreach activities can strengthen the teaching readiness of Accounting Education students by providing practical opportunities to apply accounting knowledge and develop teaching-related skills.
