Effect of Financial Scam Awareness Education on Accounting Students’ Ability to Identify Online Financial Scams in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

The increasing use of digital platforms for banking, payments, shopping, investment, and other financial activities has also created opportunities for online financial scams. Financial scam awareness education can provide students with knowledge about common scam techniques, warning signs, deceptive financial messages, and safe practices for protecting financial information. However, inadequate awareness may make students vulnerable to fraudulent online financial activities and misleading financial offers. This study examines the effect of financial scam awareness education on accounting students’ ability to identify online financial scams in Nigerian universities. The study is aimed at determining whether financial scam awareness education improves students’ ability to recognize suspicious online financial activities and distinguish fraudulent financial information from legitimate financial opportunities. Financial scam awareness education involves structured learning activities that expose students to different forms of online financial fraud and the methods commonly used by scammers. Such education may cover phishing messages, fraudulent investment offers, fake payment requests, impersonation, fraudulent online businesses, deceptive financial advertisements, and other forms of digital financial deception. Through classroom discussions, practical examples, case studies, demonstrations, and awareness exercises, students can learn to examine online financial information carefully. This form of education can also emphasize the importance of protecting financial credentials, verifying sources, and avoiding suspicious financial requests. Students’ ability to identify online financial scams refers to their capacity to recognize suspicious financial messages, fraudulent websites, deceptive investment opportunities, fake payment requests, and other indicators of online financial fraud. This ability is particularly relevant to accounting students because their academic and future professional activities involve financial information and transactions. Financial scam awareness education can improve students’ ability to examine the credibility of financial information, identify warning signs, and make informed judgments about suspicious online financial activities. Adequate awareness may therefore reduce students’ vulnerability to fraudulent financial practices. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian universities, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure students’ exposure to financial scam awareness education and their ability to identify online financial scams. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and an appropriate inferential statistical technique to determine the effect of financial scam awareness education on students’ ability to identify online financial scams. The study is expected to establish that financial scam awareness education has a positive effect on accounting students’ ability to identify online financial scams. Students who receive adequate awareness education are expected to demonstrate greater ability to recognize suspicious financial requests, deceptive online investment offers, fraudulent payment communications, and other common indicators of financial scams. The study may further establish that practical exposure to examples of online financial fraud can strengthen students’ awareness and improve their ability to make safer judgments when evaluating digital financial information. The findings are expected to have implications for the teaching and learning of Accounting Education in universities. Accounting lecturers may need to incorporate financial scam awareness and digital financial safety into relevant accounting and financial education courses. Practical activities involving the examination of simulated scam messages, suspicious financial offers, and fraudulent transaction scenarios may help students develop stronger identification skills. Such learning experiences can connect accounting knowledge with emerging financial risks associated with increased digitalization of financial activities. The study is expected to be significant to accounting students, lecturers, university management, curriculum developers, financial educators, and other stakeholders. Students may benefit from improved awareness of online financial fraud and greater ability to protect themselves when interacting with digital financial services. Lecturers may gain insight into the importance of incorporating financial scam awareness into accounting education, while curriculum developers may use the findings to strengthen digital financial safety content in accounting programmes. The study may also contribute to developing graduates who are better prepared to recognize and respond appropriately to financial fraud risks in digital environments. The study recommends that universities should strengthen financial scam awareness education within Accounting Education programmes by exposing students to current forms, warning signs, and prevention strategies associated with online financial scams. Lecturers should use practical examples, case studies, simulations, and digital learning activities to develop students’ ability to identify suspicious financial activities. Students should also be encouraged to verify online financial information and exercise caution when responding to unsolicited financial requests or offers. The study concludes that effective financial scam awareness education can improve accounting students’ ability to identify online financial scams and promote safer engagement with digital financial activities.
